How to Avoid Burnout as a Health and Wellness Coach

Starting your own business takes a great deal of hard work, grit, and determination, especially a health coaching business. It’s a balancing act of trying to market yourself, find the right clients, grow your revenue, and somehow find time to live your personal life. Oftentimes, making time for personal hobbies and rest gets put on the back burner in the early days of building a coaching business, resulting in burnout.

According to the World Health Organization, burnout is a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” In other words, not prioritizing your physical, mental, and emotional needs and working yourself to death without any proper rest is a one-way ticket to burnout, leaving you feeling isolated and chronically exhausted.

So how do we avoid this? How do we give 100% of our attention to our business while also focusing on our health? Let’s dive in!

Set specific work hours

One of the main causes of burnout is not setting good boundaries around your work and personal time. A good boundary to have in place is your dedicated work hours. It’s time to get the idea that because you are creating a business you need to work 24/7 out of your day-to-day mindset! Set specific hours each day to dedicate to work and learn to completely “log off” on your off hours. Knowing that you only have a certain amount of time to work each day can help you be more productive during those hours while also giving you the comfort of knowing that you can rest and relax at the end of the day.

Pour into yourself

Have you ever heard the phrase, “you can’t pour from an empty cup”? This should definitely resonate with you if you’re a health and wellness coach. A lot of the time, your job requires you to pour a lot of energy, time, and compassion into your clients and their health journeys. But the only way to successfully extend your time, passion, and energy to other people without reaching burnout is to pour those things into yourself as well.

Take breaks

This can go in two directions- first, learn how to take frequent breaks throughout your day to give your mind and body some time to recuperate. Second, learn how to take prolonged breaks away from everything related to your business. While growing your coaching business, especially in the beginning, it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing work-related activities during your off-hours. This can look like listening to coaching podcasts late at night or researching social media techniques or emailing your clients and answering all of their questions. While these are all important things, your brain needs a break from the constant input of information. Find creative hobbies outside of your work to help exercise different parts of your brain and give your mind some peace away from your business.

Learn to delegate

We often experience burnout because we take on 100% of the workload ourselves! Learn to delegate some of the responsibilities! Try outsourcing your social media to a marketing agency or a social media intern that can work closely with you on ideas! Hire someone to write blogs or landing pages for your website! This will help free up time for you to focus on the most important things within your business.
