Challenges Every Beginner Health Coach Faces and How to Overcome Them

With every new job or a shift in careers, there are bound to be challenges along the way. However, health coaches face a set of unique personal and professional challenges.

The health and wellness industry, especially health coaching, is surrounded by many stereotypes and unrealistic expectations mostly because of social media and health “influencers.”

For all you beginner health coaches out there, we’ve nailed down some of the most common challenges that every health coach faces when they start their own business, and we’re going to give you some tips on how to overcome them. Most importantly, we want you to know that you’re not alone! Let’s take a look.

Feeling like you should know “everything”

There seems to be this stereotype floating around that health coaches and fitness professionals know everything there is to know about health and wellness. This creates a lot of pressure on coaches which can, in turn, lead to a lack of confidence and extreme anxiety. Or it could lead to the “fake it ‘til I make it” viewpoint which doesn’t really help anyone either. But let’s get real- in the beginning, you’re not going to know everything! And that’s okay! Keep yourself open to learning, be yourself, rely on your training, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or do research topics that you don’t understand so that you can present true information to your clients.

Motivating your clients

You may have all of the required training and knowledge in order to help your clients, but the real challenge is motivating your clients to keep reaching their goals and seeing results. This all comes down to getting to know your clients and what they need from you in order to succeed. Remember to show empathy and understanding, there may be some deeper underlying issues that your client is going through and they need to know that they aren’t alone and that can achieve their goals. Try working on creating a more positive atmosphere by making fun workouts at the end of the week or playing motivational music!

Avoiding burnout

This is a big challenge and not just something that beginner health coaches face. Between training sessions with clients, scheduling, building a client base, growing your business, pursuing more education, etc. That leaves very little room for any personal time and within a few months, you’ll already be burnt out. It’s important to implement boundaries and some helpful tools at the beginning of your business venture so that you don’t experience burnout right away. Make sure that you have a life and friends that are separate from your business. Try to schedule at least one day a week to do an activity or just rest! Have someone help you with your social media posts or schedule in advance so that you don’t have to worry about publishing content and you can focus your energy on other important things.

Making sustainable money

One of the most common challenges at the very beginning is wondering when and how you are going to make sustainable money. Trust me, we’ve all been there, and it can be scary at first. But the best way to face this challenge, in the beginning, is to keep building up your business, find creative opportunities, and change what’s not working. Make sure that you aren’t under-selling your services, constantly build up your marketing efforts, and find new ways to attract new clients! Don’t worry, you will get there!
